Otaku - Obsessed Fangirl/boy with no life
"Otaku" comes from "Taku" meaning "Home." Therefore, Otaku means some who stays home all the
time because they have no life, and thus spends it on the internet or watching anime. (...hey!)
Baka - Stupid (all forms of stupid ex. idiot, dumb, idiotic, stupidhead, moron, fool, foolish, etc.)
* The conjugation of Japanese verbs work with all nouns. For instance, Dekimasu can mean I can, you can, he can, they can, it can, etc. However, for the ease of translation these verbs have been translated using only one pronoun.
Fangirl!
OC - Original Character
A character that someone made up that lives in the same world as the characters in their
show.
OOC - Out Of Character
Not to be confused with OC, OOC refers to a character behaving oddly and not at all like their
usual self.
Ship / Shipping -
When you support a pairing of two characters in a show (including OCs), you "ship it."
Quite often these ships will have cute couple names, like Zutara (Zuko x Katara) or Kataang (Katara x Aang).
AU - Alternate Universe
A term used in fan fiction that denotes it as having a vastly different reality to that of the
actual story (ex. instead of going to Hogwarts, Harry goes to camp where Snape is his camp
counselor. Ooh, someone should write that XD)
Canon -
Anything that happens or exists within the original show. It is canon that Harry goes to Hogwarts,
for example, or that the Mirror of Erised exists. The most common thing to be referred to as canon
is ships, for example, the ship Edward x Bella in Twilight is canon.
Moe - pronounced Moh-Eh
Exclusively used in manga/anime fanbases, moe is both an adjective and a noun. If a girl in the
anime is moe (budding), then that means she is a cute, almost child-like girl with the same sexiness
as a full-grown woman. Characters can also have a moe (attraction) to a certain type of character,
i.e. a glasses-girl moe. Fangirls also use this as an interjection when afronted with a character
they consider to be moe.
One-Shot -
A fan fiction that contains only one chapter and is not intended to be continued, sort of like
a short story.
Slash -
A pairing of two straight male characters in a show. The female version is femslash.
Yaoi (m.) / Yuri (f.) -
Manga / Anime featuring homosexual relationships between the main characters as canon. Yaoi is
the male version, Yuri the female version.
Marriage Law -
Classic fan fiction AU plot device where two characters are forced into an arranged marriage.
Squee -
The sound a fangirl makes when she gets over excited about her show. It's also a verb (to squee).
Glomp -
Essentially hug-rape, glomping is forcably and enthusiastically hugging someone without letting go
for a very long time. Usually plays a role im fangirl fantasies ("Ohmigod Edward, I love you! *glomp*")
Chibi -
Technically is Japanese for small, chibi is a style of drawing characters where they have really big
eyes and heads disproportionate to their tiny little bodies. The overall effect is very cute.
Kawaii -
The Japanese word for cute, which is used by fangirls to describe in particular the special
breed of cuteness that is Japan. For example, unicorns are cute but not kawaii, whereas hello kitty is
both cute AND kawaii. You see?
Neko -
Any character given cat ears in fan art or cosplay. Why fangirls do this is anyone's guess.
Neko also refers to fangirls themselves wearing the ears simply as an act of fangirly glee.
Cosplay -
Role-playing in costume. A fangirly pastime.
Para-para -
Choreographed Japanese group dancing, and yet another fangirly pastime. Popular favorites are
Caramelldansen and Hare Hare Yukai.
